DC Cardwell - Some Hope

CD Reviews

DC Cardwell grew up in Portadown, Northern Ireland and spent some years in Vancouver, Canada, before moving to Melbourne, Australia.

Here’s a quick look and opinion of the tracks on DC Cardwell’s CD, Some Hope.

“I Am Still The Same” and “Birthday Present”:  Acoustic flavoured tracks from DC that clearly shows his Beatles influence, or to this ear - Paul McCartney's and John Lennon's reflective styling.  Beautifully written pop tracks that remind us of the child within, or the innocent side of life.

“Peace and Love” – Again, a Beatles or Neil Young styled track.  The album title “Some Hope” springs to mind through this song and its happy, upbeat tempo.
Additional note: As it happens, it’s been a favourite on Neil Young's Web site showcase (neilyoung.com)

“The First Time” – Listening to this song makes one wonder if Lennon may have written it for Yoko – clearly DC Cardwell has tapped into the peaceful and private love that would belong to two soul mates ‘the first time’ one recognized the other.  Very sweet.

“Way With Words” – A tongue in cheek observation on a particular relationship issue.  Clever lyrics over an easy track.  This and ‘The First Time’ also show shades of Bob Dylan.

“Meet The Author” – This is reminiscent of the style of Paul McCartney’s “Wings”.  Well written lyrics and melody… great title and enjoyable.

“A Minute Of Your Time” – Neil Young tones.  This is a humourous and clever lyric from a man to a woman – him trying to get it right, and her not quite getting it, but he doesn’t give up.  Fun track.

“In A Thousand Years” – McCartney tones – perhaps Paul McCartney should consider co-writing with DC Cardwell to cover the stories of the latter part of life… seemingly DC, while possibly tapping into his own life, may have covered some of it for Paul.

“Nobody Taught Me” – This is one of the simplistic tracks on the album that you might imagine getting a fair bit of airplay in the late 60’s/early 70’s.

“We Fell” – The intro of this song instantly brings to mind songs like Beatles “Please, Please Me” and Crowded House’s “It’s Only Natural” but quickly takes on a life of it’s own.  A relationship song.

“Tom Is Everybody’s Friend” – DC Cardwell’s sense of humour is apparent with this track written for Tom on MySpace.  A fun track and free download on DC Cardwell’s website.

“Unrecorded” – One take on the importances of life.

“The Quiet Ages” – Paul McCartney and Wings style.  It’s about the lyric with this track.  The Quiet Ages… very mellow track, if not slightly repetitive.

“The Way Of A Woman With A Man” – A very laid back track.  Introspective - male’s  perspective on woman.  Neil Young tones.

“Know Me” -  Another very laid back track. Relationship based.
Not the strongest song on the album.

“Something Worth Voting For” – A fun track with a message, perhaps inspired by the “Clinton years”.  This song brings about mental images of the 70’s US West Coast surf scene.
A fine end to an album filled with publishable songs and potential television soundtracks perhaps for the likes of shows like “Friends” or ‘That 70’s Show”.
