CD: The Healys Live - Tracklist

Whiskey in the Jar is a famous Irish traditional song set in the Cork and Kerry mountains, about a highwayman who is betrayed by his lover. To the folk of seventeenth century Ireland, where the gentlemen of the roads robbed English landlords, they were regarded as national patriots. Such feelings inspired this rollicking ballad. Recorded live @ Paddy Hannan’s. Live engineering by Graham Owens.

The Wild Rover is a popular traditional folk song. It is often considered to be a drinking song rather than a temperance song. The song is a staple for artists performing live music in Irish pubs who quite often relate to this story. ‘Never again’, they moan! Recorded live @ The Shed.

Tell Me Ma (also called "The Wind") is a well known traditional children's song. It was collected in various parts of England in the 19th century and again appears in collections from shortly after the turn of the 20th century. Recorded live @ The Shed.

The Irish Rover is a traditional Irish song about a magnificent, though improbable, sailing ship that reaches an unfortunate end. The poor auld dog! Recorded live @ Paddy Hannan’s. Live engineering by Graham Owens.

Dirty Old Town is a song written by Ewan MacColl in 1949. It was originally composed for an interlude to cover an awkward scene change in his Salford set 1949 play “Landscape with Chimneys”, but with the growing popularity of folk music the song became a standard for most folk bands. Recorded live @ Paddy Hannan’s. Live engineering by Graham Owens.

The Leaving of Liverpool is a popular folk ballad. The song's narrator laments his long sailing trip to America and the thought of leaving his birthplace and loved ones, especially his “own true love”. Recorded live @ Paddy Hannan’s. Live engineering by Graham Owens.

The Black Velvet Band is a traditional Irish folk song describing transportation to Australia, a common punishment in the19th century. The song tells the story of a tradesman who meets a young woman who has stolen an item and passed it on to him. The man then appears in court the next day, charged with stealing the item and is sent to Van Diemen's Land for doing so. Recorded live @ JB O’Reillys.

Follow Me Up to Carlow is an Irish folk song celebrating the defeat of an army of 3,000 English soldiers by Fiach McHugh O'Byrne at the Battle of Glenmalure, during the Second Desmond Rebellion in 1580. Not for the faint hearted this one! Recorded live @ The Shed.

Jug of Punch a traditional Irish song that was written around 1845 and performed in the drama – The Green Bushes. Recorded live @ Paddy Hannan’s. Live engineering by Graham Owens.

Spancil Hill is a traditional Irish folk song, which bemoans the plight of the Irish immigrants who so longed for home far from their new lives in America, many of whom went to California with the Gold Rush. Recorded live @ Paddy Hannan’s. Live engineering by Graham Owens.
