13th Annual International Survivors of Suicide Day – Saturday 19th November 2011
TRAGEDY FOR THE BORDERERS INSPIRES NEW HOPE AND MUSIC
Multi-Award winning Scottish / Irish / Australian band The Borderers formed in 1994 and have released 8 albums, 4 EP's, 2 children’s albums, have been included on 31 compilation albums all around the world. With combined sales of 68,000 CD's & DVD's, they’ve supported artists including Tom Jones, The Proclaimers, The Chieftans and Shane McGowan from The Pogues.
Alex and Jim Paterson (The BordererS) are sharing first-hand the trauma and courage of moving forward after the suicide of a child. The couple’s son, Rowan, took his own life in January 2010 and they have set about recovering the only way they know how - through music. The result is The Borderers’ first album in four years - a double disc album with the celebratory ‘Rise Up’ and the more ballad based and reflective ‘Tales of Love and Loss’. The couple’s hope is that the album and its promotion will spread the message that there is help available for those of us plagued with dark thoughts. Jim said that mental illness and suicide touches so many people, yet there is still a taboo about discussing it. “When we lost Rowan it was about as low as we could get, but even if we felt like packing it all in, we still have our daughter Asia, and we owed it to her to show that no matter what happens there is still life and hope for the future.”
To commemorate and celebrate Rowan’s life the band will release the album on 11th November – at 60 Rosstown Rd Carnegie Vic.Melbourne
19 November – International Suicide Awareness Day – at Norwood Live in Adelaide The Heritage listed Norwood Hotel is situated in the heart of cosmopolitan Norwood located just minutes from the CBD. Located on the corner of the Parade & Osmond Terrace and just meters from the Norwood Football Oval, the Norwood Hotel is a landmark property.
In a bid to highlight the issue and get more people talking about it. “It’s really simple, but if people feel they can speak about their low feelings with others, then the power of those feelings is lessened and it can lead to recovery,” said Jim. “The launch will be a celebratory event dedicated to the lives of those lost, the family and friends left behind, and the power of the human spirit to recover and move on.”
